Fall of the Old Norse Empire

The fall of the Old Norse Empire marked the end of one of Ulvenor's oldest multiracial states. The war with the Kingdom of Trabazar exposed the weaknesses of the antiquated system of government and military tactics. The decisive battle of the New Order showed that the old ways were no longer sufficient for the new form of warfare.

Stagnation of the old order

After centuries of stability, the Old Norse Empire began to change only minimally. Its government remained highly centralized, with almost all authority concentrated in the hands of the king. While other states were beginning to experiment with new forms of administration and military organization, the Old Norse Empire stuck to tradition. This model worked for a long time, but the moment an adversary capable of innovation appeared, it turned out to be a major weakness.

Rise of Trabazar

A new kingdom, Trabazar, emerged in the south and quickly demonstrated its military and organizational superiority. His ambitions were clear – to acquire the fertile territories of the north. The tension between the two states gradually escalated into war. The conflict lasted for five years and gradually spilled over in favor of Trabazar, which was able to make better use of tactics, mobility and new ways of fighting.

Battle for the New Order

The decisive clash took place in -2700 in the area of today's Nickel Hills. The Old Norse army under the leadership of King Jirex III. took an advantageous position on the heights. In the front line were heavily armored dwarves with shields, archers behind them and cavalry in reserve. However, Trabazar came up with a new tactic. Mobile chariots with archers provided cover while allowing rapid movement across the battlefield. When the Old Norse cavalry charged, they were lured into a trap and destroyed by hidden spearmen. Without a drive and with a weakened second line, the lumbering dwarves became vulnerable. The enemy gradually surrounded them and broke their resistance. The battle ended in the complete defeat of the Old Norse Empire.

The end of the empire and the new order

King Jirex III surrendered to General Quilore after the defeat, symbolically ending the empire's existence. Trabazar gained a significant part of the territory, while the rest was transformed into the new kingdom of Borundar, which became his vassal. The dwarves who formed the backbone of the old empire's defenses left the newly formed order and returned to their mountain kin. It was from these groups that the culture of shield dwarves gradually developed. The fall of the Old Norse Empire thus not only meant the end of one state, but also the end of an era. Eras when tradition was enough to survive. From this moment Ulvenor began to enter a period where the ability to change was decisive.
