The regency and usurpation of Oleda I.

Magnursie — House of Youlenders dynastic crisis 1 132–1 140 IC

Oled I's regency began as a temporary solution after Theodore II's death, but gradually turned into one of the Youlenders' darkest dynastic crises. Oledo isolated the rightful heir Magnus, tried to obtain judicial confirmation of his own claim, and when unsuccessful had Magnus murdered. In 1140, he had himself crowned emperor.

Regent for child heir

After the death of Theodore II. his son Magnus was still a child. Therefore, on his deathbed, Theodore entrusted his brother Oled with the regency to rule temporarily until Magnus came of age. This decision was intended to protect the empire from uncertainty. But it actually opened the way for the regent to start looking at the throne as his own opportunity.

Bellorost and the lawsuit

Oledo had Magnus isolated in Bellorost Castle in the High Towers, far from the court and the capital. Only teachers and guards had access to it, so the rightful heir grew up more like a prisoner than a future emperor. Oledo then presented a case to the courts that Magnus would be unfit to rule and the crown should fall to the regent. Because of the revealed bribes, the judges were changed several times, and finally the court decided that the regent had no right to take over the imperial throne.

A crown won by blood

After failure in court, Oledo chose a violent solution. Magnus was thrown from the tower and his death was ruled a suicide, although few believed it. The new situation enabled Oled to force his opponents to retreat, and in 1140 he had himself crowned emperor. However, he actually ruled since 1132. This turned the regency into a usurpation that marked the entire further development of the family.
