Konrad I. Usher to the throne
Konrad I entered history as a man who rose to the throne through a crisis but kept it through cold calculation. He was not a ruler whom the people loved for nobility or moral example. His strength was the ability to quickly recognize where real power lay and act without inhibition. It was during his reign that an event took place that later indirectly prepared the arrival of the Sorcerer and the entire era of magic.
Dynastic Information
Boarding from the west branch
Konrad I. came from a branch of the family connected with the Western Sound. He came to the throne thanks to the agreement forced by his father Ivo to save the kingdom during the reign of Yllona I. His very accession was thus marked by compromise and the feeling that the crown did not pass to the new ruler naturally, but was bought with a political price. However, Konrad did not see this as a weakness. On the contrary. He understood well that the throne would not be held by the one who only had a formal claim to it, but by the one who could control the decisive nodes of power.
Unification of power and liquidation of rivals
One of his first steps was to revoke the autonomy of the Western Voice that his clan had previously gained. In doing so, he sent a clear message that he did not want to be just a representative of one branch of the dynasty, but the real ruler of the entire kingdom. At the same time, however, he angered his own relatives, especially his brother Netor. When Netor came against him, Konrad defeated him in a short war. But what followed was even more remarkable. Instead of leaving the rule of the Western Voice to his family, he installed Frank, son of Yllona, there. This move was masterful. This won him the favor of part of the dynasty and weakened the image that he had merely seized a foreign crown for himself. Later, he had Netor and his closest allies assassinated during the Diet and had the event presented as a rebel attack. Such actions show what kind of ruler Conrad really was - a man who did not hesitate to use lies and blood if it strengthened his rule.
A king without great legend, but with great consequence
After consolidating power, his reign was not as dramatic as previous years at first glance. However, this is precisely where its special character lies. Konrad ruled more behind the scenes, through the control of people and decisive nodes of power than through grand gestures and famous reforms. In the end, the most important event of his reign was not the war or the law, but the expedition to the west. Konrad sent a group of adventurers to bring new knowledge and expand the horizon of the kingdom. The expedition encountered naga kobolds, was carried by a storm further out to sea, and some of its members reached the new continent. It was from this quest that the man who would later return as the Sorcerer emerged. Although Konrad could not realize it, of course, his decision opened the way for the biggest change in the history of the world.
Historical picture of Konrad I.
Conrad I is one of those dynasty figures who seem less flamboyant than the famous reformers or warrior kings, but whose importance is extraordinary. It represents a transition from a dynasty still reacting to the crisis legacy of the Silk Kings to one capable of hard centralizing power. At the same time, his reign shows that a minor branch of the family can not only win the crown, but also change the rules of the game. This will happen again later in Magnurs history.
