A community of stone and wood
After the weakening of the elven empire, the desert goblins once again tried to expand their influence. This time, however, they faced an unexpected alliance - elves and mining dwarves, who together halted their advance and formed one of the first inter-racial alliances in Ulvenor's history.
The world after Sylvar
Several thousand years after Sylvar's death, the Elven Empire still remained the dominant force in southern Ulvenor, but its unity was no longer as strong as it had been at the time of its formation. Individual regions had more autonomy, old families vied for influence, and the borders of the empire were not as tightly guarded as before. The elves still ruled, but their vigilance had waned. It was this weakening that the remnants of the desert goblins took advantage of.
Return of the Desert Goblins
The desert goblins who survived the defeat at Maplewood spent generations adapting and rebuilding their strength. It was not a unified empire, but a network of tribes that shared a common goal - revenge. Their new expeditions were more careful, more organized and focused not only on elven territories, but also on trade routes and smaller settlements. Gradually, they also began to threaten areas that previously lay outside the main conflict lines - including the mountainous regions where the dwarves operated.
The mining dwarves enter the war
The mining dwarves were scattered throughout Ulvenor at the time, establishing mines and trading posts. Their presence in the southern and western regions meant that they were among the first to feel the increasing pressure of goblin raids. Unlike the elves, the mining dwarves did not have large territories to defend. Their strength lay in mobility, knowledge of the underground and the ability to react quickly. When their mines began to be attacked and trade routes disrupted, they decided to intervene - not alone, but in cooperation with the elves.
A community of stone and wood
The alliance between elves and mine gnomes was unusual. Both races had a different way of life, culture and outlook on the world. Yet they were united by a common enemy. The Elves brought terrain knowledge, organization, and the ability to wage war in open space. The dwarves brought technical skills, knowledge of underground routes, and the ability to operate where others were lost. Together, they created a force that could respond to goblin tactics more effectively than either race individually.
War of two worlds
The conflict that followed was not a single decisive battle, but a series of skirmishes across desert fringes, forest borders, and mountainous regions. The elves held back the orcs in the forests and open terrain while the dwarves penetrated their hideouts, destroying supply lines and closing access routes. This combination of surface and underground pressure gradually weakened the goblin tribes and prevented them from regaining greater territorial control.
Legacy of the Alliance
The war ended by gradually weakening the desert goblins and pushing them back into inhospitable areas. It wasn't total destruction, but a loss of initiative. The alliance of elves and dwarves became one of the first documented cases of inter-racial military cooperation on Ulvenor. Although the alliance was not permanent, it created the basis for future relations between the two nations and showed that even very different civilizations could join forces against a common threat.
