Frederik II Tough

The Emperor of the Peacemaker Guild and the completion of the third line of defense Magnursie — House of Renders
590 IC 671 IC 618–671 IC

Frederik II he took over from his father an empire that was formally stabilized, but in reality still relied on fear, bribery and the fragile loyalty of both the military and the nobility. He ruled long and systematically. It was under him that the period later known as the Purge of the Emperor's Enemies began. He founded the Peacemakers' Guild, consolidated the repressive apparatus, and continued the harsh rule of House Render. However, his era was also marked by a humiliating defeat in the northwest, where the kobolds showed that magic and military ingenuity were no longer the prerogative of the Empire. Frederik II thus he remains a double-faced monarch – as a man who at home consolidated the regime with iron and shadow, but externally suffered one of the most significant losses of his time.

The emperor who turned fear into a system

Frederik II he did not invent a new style of government, but perfected the one left behind by his father. He continued to bribe opponents, harshly supervise the nobility, and build power based on personal loyalty. The most important step of his reign was the establishment of the Peacemakers' Guild, an organization that outwardly appeared as an instrument of order but actually functioned as the empire's secret police. The Peacemakers gathered intelligence on opponents of the Emperor, infiltrated the nobility and cities, tracked down suspicious connections, and created a web of fear that stretched beyond the regular administration and military. In some cases, uncomfortable people ended up in dungeons, in others they simply disappeared. This began the era that will later be called the Purge of the Emperor's enemies, although under Frederik II. it was only the first, systematically built phase of this regime.

Defeat in the Northwest

The biggest blow to Frederik's reign was the kobold incursion into the northwest of the empire, that is, into the area that belonged to the last major sections without a fully completed third line of defense. The kobolds weren't attacking alone here. They were supported by smaller dwarven colonies far from the Stonecrown as well as remnant goblin tribes. In addition, the Empire encountered a new fact that could no longer be ignored - magic ceased to be its unequivocal superiority. Frederik sent three expeditions to rescue the northwest, but none achieved their goal. The climax of the disaster was the Battle of the Velvet Meadows, where the kobolds used magic to cover the swamps around the battlefield. The imperial heavies, who were the backbone of the strike force, fell into the mud and became easy targets for arrows, fire and magic attacks. As the fight moved into close quarters, the kobolds also deployed gas grenades taken from their goblin allies. After two hours, the imperial army disintegrated. Frederik was forced to accept a truce and cede the lost areas, which then became part of the Great Plains.

Completion of the third line of defense

It was this defeat that led Frederik II. to a decision that would ultimately become his most lasting positive legacy. He maximized the third line of defense project and brought it to completion. In doing so, he actually admitted that some of the old borders would no longer be possible to restore, but at the same time he created a defense system that would protect the empire for generations to come. The rest of his life was then rather characterized by an internal calming of circumstances. Externally, he had no more great triumphs, but at home he kept the empire firmly under control. That's why he earned the nickname Tough - not as a great conqueror, but as a man who ruled long, hard and without mercy, even if he was not always honored.
