Clash of the Five Clans
The Clash of the Five Houses was the most significant battle of the middle phase of the Second Power War and one of Valendor II's last great victories. Against the imperial army and its allies from the Zelin family, the main forces of the rebels led by the Youlenders, the Poldechys and the Okoliochs stood here. The battle showed that the Imperial Army, despite being exhausted, could still maintain its superiority in discipline, choice of terrain, and firm leadership. At the same time, however, it was a victory that could no longer reverse the long-term course of the war.
The battle that was to decide the next stage of the war
By 1012, the Second Power War had turned into a huge conflict that tore the entire empire into two blocs. The uprising was no longer just a regional rebellion of a few offended clans. Under the leadership of Jan Youlender, it turned into a real alternative power that had its own military background, the support of large territories and an ever-increasing self-confidence. This is precisely why the Clash of the Five Clans had such extraordinary significance. On one side stood Emperor Valendor II. and his main allies from the Zelin family, the Youlenders, Poldechs and Okoliochs on the other. It was a direct clash of the strongest aristocratic blocs of the time, and everyone understood that the result would show who would have the initiative in the years to come.
Hills, formations and the break of the third attack
The Imperial Army entered the battle with a major advantage – it occupied more favorable elevated positions and could impose its own rhythm on the battle. Valendor and his commanders bet on solid formations, high ground defense and precisely controlled exhaustion of the enemy. The rebels, on the other hand, had to attack, because a long wait would only weaken their moral and strategic position. The first two rebel attacks failed to break the Imperial line. The third attempt was the strongest, but at the same time it exhausted them so much that when the Imperial Army decided to counterattack, they ran into a tired opponent with weakened ranks. Valendor's troops dismounted from their vantage points at the moment when the enemy lost most of their strength, breaking the battle.
Victory without a future
In the end, the rebel party decided to retreat and had to sacrifice approximately one-sixth of their forces in order for the withdrawal to succeed at all. The battle thus ended in a clear imperial victory and also became the first official major defeat of Jan Youlender as the leader of the rebellion. But it was here that the tragedy of Valendor's position became apparent. The Clash of the Five Clans was one of his last great achievements, but he was no longer able to reverse the long-term exhaustion of the empire. The rebels recovered from their defeat, while the Emperor's economy and supply capabilities continued to be weakened by the war. The battle thus entered history as a triumph of tactics and discipline that could no longer save the weakening throne.
