Battle of the Hultwin River
A decisive clash between the united Orcs under Pender the Strong and the Elven Empire. The Battle of the Hultwin River ended the Orcs' first attempt to create an empire and definitively established Elven dominance.
A clash of two worlds
Pender the Strong's campaign brought the united goblin tribes to the borders of the elven realm. After a series of victories over the kobolds and the conquest of several cities, the orcs faced the true powers of Ulvenor for the first time. The elves were at the height of their power at the time. They had an organized army, knowledge of the terrain and a disciplined way of fighting. Orcs, on the other hand, relied on strength, numbers, and raiding experience. The Battle of the Hultwin River was thus not only a military clash, but also a confrontation of two different approaches to war.
Elven supremacy
The elves chose the battlefield carefully. The more open space around the river allowed for the deployment of fast cavalry, which was extremely effective against walking goblins. Riders were disrupting the goblin formation, attacking weak points and gradually breaking their cohesion. The goblins were unable to respond to such mobility and their attack lost coordination. While the goblins expected a direct clash of strength, they were forced to counter tactics that weakened them before they could use their physical superiority.
A battle of legends
In the midst of the chaos of the battle, the elven hero Enhih stepped forward, determined to end the conflict personally. He dismounted and challenged Pender the Strong to a duel. The clash between the two leaders was long and exhausting. Enhih lost an arm during the fight, which seemed to be the decisive moment in favor of the goblin king. However, Pender underestimated his opponent. Enhih took advantage of his confidence, slowing the pace of the fight and gradually wearing him down. Finally he was able to deliver the decisive blow and kill Pender.
Collapse of the Goblin Army
Pender's death had an immediate and overwhelming impact. The goblin army, which was based on the personal authority of its leader, had lost all cohesion. The units disbanded and began to retreat chaotically. What could have been an even match turned into a complete collapse in a short time. The elves took advantage of the situation and defeated the scattered forces of the enemy definitively.
Consequences of the battle
The Battle of the Hultwin River marked the end of the First Orc Empire. Pender's attempt at unification was destroyed and the Orcs lost their position in western Ulvenor. In the following years, the conquered territories were liberated or taken over by elves and kobolds. Orcs retreated or were pushed out of the region entirely. In a broader sense, it was a confirmation of the dominance of the elven empire, and at the same time a proof that a power based only on a personal leader cannot stand against an organized state in the long term.
