Dynastic Information
A warrior trusted even by his opponents
Konrad II he entered the throne already as a well-known personality. He had military successes, including prominence at the Battle of Deer Fields, as well as fighting against goblins on the northeastern frontier. It was there that the power of the third line of defense showed itself again, able to protect the empire from incursions from the troubled regions. Konrad was said to have had no real enemy. This does not mean that he was weak or toothless, but that he was able to act in such a way that even the defeated did not feel completely humiliated. After Oled's usurpation and Edward's deposition, he was exactly the type of monarch the empire needed.
Restoration of the Provinces and the Order of the White Horse
One of Conrad's first reforms was the restoration of the economic administration of the provinces. After years of weather fluctuations, many areas were too centrally controlled because they could not supply themselves. As the weather began to return to normal, Konrad returned more responsibility to the provinces for their own food stability. Another important step was the establishment of the Order of the White Horse. This order of chivalry was supposed to bring together virtuous and experienced warriors who would intervene in provinces threatened by unrest. Members gave up property and handed it over to the order, which at the same time received rewards for its interventions. The order quickly became an important military and social institution.
Gold coins and the currency of the entire continent
Konrad's greatest reform went beyond the boundaries of the empire. Although the empire already had its own unified currency, currencies of other countries still appeared in circulation. Therefore, after twenty years of diplomatic travels, Konrad pushed for a single currency known as gold coins, the value of which was clearly derived from the amount of gold in the coin. The coins were neutral in design so that no culture felt they were adopting a symbol of foreign domination. Values ranged from one gilt to a thousand guilders, with the higher coins being so heavy that they were hardly used in general circulation. Nevertheless, the currency spread to elven, gnome, and dwarven lands and gradually supplanted most other forms of currency.
The beginning of the second golden age
Konrad II made his mark not only in the history of the empire, but also in the history of the entire continent. His reign created an economic, administrative and cultural foundation upon which other monarchs could build. It is from him that the second golden age of the empire is often counted. After his death, a grand procession of the empire was arranged for the people of the various provinces to bid farewell to him. This funeral was not just a ceremony, but a public confirmation that Konrad belongs among the great emperors.
